Rehome Roots provides homes to Australians displaced by natural disaster, the housing crisis and unexpected life events — through a rent-to-buy model where every repayment funds a home for the next person in need.
In February 2022 the Wilsons River at Lismore peaked at 14.37 metres — the largest flood since records began. Four people died in Lismore. Thousands of homes across the Northern Rivers were destroyed or made unliveable.
Some people found their way back. Many did not. Insurance fell short, rentals vanished, and families who had owned their homes outright found themselves with nowhere to go and nothing to borrow against.
Rehome Roots was founded in the aftermath, by people who were here for it. Disaster is only one of the reasons people lose a home — the housing crisis, illness, separation and sudden job loss do the same thing quietly, every day. The response we built works for all of them.
We don't hand out emergency accommodation and hope for the best. We place a real home, and we give the person living in it a way to eventually own it outright.
We provide a modular, expandable or off-grid transportable home, sited on land offered by a host or secured by us. It is a home, not a shelter.
The resident enters an affordable rent-to-buy agreement. Payments are set against what they can genuinely manage, not against the market.
Once the home is repaid, it is theirs. Every dollar repaid goes straight back into housing the next person waiting.
A donation to Rehome Roots does not fund one home once. It funds a home, which is repaid, which funds the next home, which is repaid again. Each gift keeps housing people long after it is given — and each resident ends up owning something, rather than renting forever.
If you have lost your home, or are at serious risk of losing it, you can apply to the rent-to-buy program. Applications are assessed on need and on capacity to sustain the agreement.
How the program works →If you have unused land, you can host a home at no cost to you. We fund, install, insure and maintain it, and pay you a land rental. You keep final approval over who lives there.
About land hosting →We are a small charity in the early stages of a long job. Every donation is tax deductible, and because of the rent-to-buy model, every donation keeps working after the first family moves in.
